Thanjavur (Tanjore)

Thanjavur
was the ancient capital of the Chola kings whose origins, like those of the Pallavas, Pandyas and Cheras with whom they shared the tip of the Indian peninsula, go back to the beginning of the Christian era. Power struggles between these groups were a constant attribute of their early history with one or another gaining the increasing from time to time. The Chola's turn for empire building came between 850 and 1270 AD and at the heights of their power they controlled the greater part of the Indian peninsula south of a line drawn between Mumbai and Puri and included parts of Sri Lanka and even, for a while, the Srivijaya kingdom of the Malay peninsula and Sumatra.
