SASAN GIR LION SANCTUARY

Sasan Gir Lion Sanctuary, which lies on the southwestern fringes of the Saurashtra Peninsula (west-central India), is the last home of some 300 Asiatic lions. It was created in 1913 to protect the largest surviving groups of the Asiatic lions. It was given a sanctuary status in 1965. Sasan Gir Lion Sanctuary is made out of three adjoining reserves-the Nalsarover Lake, the Little Rann of Kutch, and the Flamingo Island. Situated in the Junagarh district of Gujarat, the Gir National Park is a fusion of deciduous forest with Teak, Banyan and the Acacia. The Asiatic Lions are slightly smaller in size than their African complement, and the best way to see them is in their natural habitat at the fall of dawn. Gir offers its visitors a enjoyable drives through the hilly tracts with river side views.

The effort by the then Nawab of Junagarh to save the lion population has yielded results as there are about 300 Lions presently in the park. The obsession for shikar or hunting was greatly seen in the Ancient Rulers to show off their daring and the tradition was kept alive by the British Dignitaries.

BANDHAVGARH NATIONAL PARK

Bandhavgarh National Park is spread at vindhya hills in Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh National Park consists of a core area of 105 sq km and a buffer area of approximately 400 sq km of topography varies between steep ridges, undulating, forest and open meadows. Bandhavgarh National Park is known for the Royal Bengal Tigers. The density of the Tiger population at Bandhavgarh is the top known in India. Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh was declared as a national park in 1968 when the Maharaja of Rewa handed over the area to the government for its formation.

CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

Corbett National Park is situated at the foothills of the lofty Himalayas in the state of Uttranchal is the Corbett National Park, India's first and finest national park. The Corbett National Park inhabits a wide variety of rare and endangered flora & fauna. Corbett is famous for its population of Tigers, Leopards and Elephants. Corbett national park is drained by the Ramganga River, the dam at Kalagarh forming a huge lake to the west of the national park. The park is basically a large low valley.

A range of hills runs through the middle of the national park, roughly east to west. The forests are moist deciduous, with Sal as the dominant tree. Chir Pine trees are to be found on the higher ridges of the hills. On the low-lying areas riverine forests, with Shisham and Khair trees, are intermixed with grasslands known locally as 'Chaurs'. Corbett National Park receive thousands of visitors every year. A variety of facilities are available to house tourists within and outside the park.

KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK

The Kaziranga National Park is located in the northeastern state of Assam in India on the southern bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River. It covers an area of 430 sq km and is located 40-80 m above sea level. In 1908, Kaziranga was declared a reserve forest to protect this original endangered species imposing a ban on poaching of Indian Rhino. The Kaziranga National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940 and in 1974 it was given the status of a national park. The national park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. By the efforts of the Indian government and the zoo officials, from then figure of 12 Rhino in early 90's, the rhino population of Kaziranga has exceed to thousand Rhinos.

There are many attractions in and around Kaziranga. The areas adjoining the parkare easily available on the backs of elephants, though they sound like tough terrains. Mihimukh is the starting point for the park and elephants can be hire from here to enter the sanctuary.
